Džeko puts in solid debut for City

Edin Džeko made his Premiership debut tonight for Manchester City against Wolverhampton. I watched the whole game and was very pleased with the performance of our striker, who seems to have delighted the City fans as well. Although he didn’t score himself, Džeko set up the corner for the Citizens’ second goal, made a brilliant play to grab the assist for the third and had a hand in Carlos Tevez’ header for the fourth, drawing most of the Wolves defenders and consequently leaving the Argentine with plenty of space. On top of all this, he had several nice runs where he showed off his skills, at one point leaving a Wolves’ defender flat on his ass.
A few lazy journalists have already come out with headlines about how Carlos Tévez upstaged Džeko’s debut. I’m not sure what game they were watching, but I’d point out that it was precisely Džeko’s presence that gave Tévez the freedom he put to such good use tonight (the fourth goal being just one example). Although Džeko might not replicate his Bundesliga goal tally with Tévez being the focus of attack, their partnership already looks lethal. Furthermore, I think things will only get better once David Silva returns and Džeko gets his conditioning back up (he looked a little tired by the end today). It’s early, but our star’s City career looks off to a good start.
Update: The BBC has a post-game interview with him here.
